The Alpago basin is one of the most renowned free-flight sites in the Triveneto, and Villa al Lago is right in the middle. From Mount Dolada, about 1,500 meters above sea level, paragliders and hang gliders take off with views of Lake Santa Croce, the Valbelluna and the Pre-Alps-a panorama that alone is worth the experience.
The flight lasts an average of about 20 minutes: you take advantage of the basin’s updrafts and, on the best days, can climb up to 2,000 meters by flying over the peaks. For those who have never flown before, tandem ( two-seater) flying is the easiest way to try it: no special requirements are needed, just a pair of sneakers and slightly warmer-than-usual sports clothing, because at altitude the temperature drops even in summer. The rest is taken care of by instructor pilots, who provide all the equipment-helmet, harness, emergency parachute.
Several entities with years of experience operate in the area: the Delta Club Dolada, active since 1987 and a historical reference point for free flight in Alpago, and HiFly Paragliding, which organizes tandem flights from both Dolada and the Agordo area. Prices for a tandem flight are between 100 and 140 euros, including flight video. For those who want to get serious, both entities also offer courses for the flight license.
Not far away, Mount Avena above Feltre represents another historic flying site, taking off at about 1,400 meters and landing in the Feltre valley. The Guarnieri Trophy, one of Italy’s longest-running paragliding competitions, is held here every year. Mount Pizzoc, overlooking the Cansiglio plateau, also offers excellent conditions and the possibility of distance flights to Valdobbiadene and beyond.
The flying season runs roughly from March to November, but is always weather dependent: ideal weather includes a dry day and light wind. Flight schools in the area can also arrange midweek flights on short notice-perfect for incorporating an extra experience during your stay.
From the garden of Villa al Lago, the Dolada Delta Club meeting point in Pieve d’Alpago is a handful of minutes away by car. Just enough time to get there, and you’re flying.
